What is Fiber and why is it so good for us?
Fiber is obtained from plant foods only. Animal food products do not contain any fiber at all. It may sometimes be referred to as “roughage” and the term “bulking up” is sometimes used to indicate taking fiber on board. It is important to maintain the correct amount of fiber in your diet because the body uses it to help up your internal system. Fiber in itself is not digestible, so when we eat it, it will eventually get expelled though our normal body functions, but on the way around our systems, it collects the undesirable toxins which then get excreted along with the indigestible fiber.
What other benefits does fiber provide?
As well as helping our bodies to get rid on unwanted toxins, fiber has several other benefits.
• It helps to lower cholesterol
• Helps to make you feel more full when dieting
• Improves digestive function
• Reduces the risk of constipation
• Helps to produce healthy well formed stools
• Reduces risks of some cancers (colon cancer in particular)
Levels of Fiber
As a general rule of thumb, you should look towards ingesting approximately 8 grams of fiber at each mealtime, so on a daily basis, (including 1 snack per day), you should be aiming for up to 35 grams per day. The majority of the US population only ingests between 10 and 20 grams per day, so they need to seriously look at addressing this problem.
