When one looks at the diabetic diet, the main alteration that has to take place is for sugar to be replaced. This is according to the glycaemic index and it is very important. Sugar is a major no-no for diabetics – no chocolates, no fizzy drinks, no actual sugar or anything else that is sweetened. In studies that have been conducted in the past it has been said that by eating foods that offer low GI, you will be able to prevent differences in your blood insulin levels, which will keep you in the “safe zone”. It is very important for you to remember to look after yourself when you are diabetic.

There are a few types of foods that are better for a diabetic to eat rather than other foods, as they have certain needs that need to be met. Some of these foods include bitter melon or karela, apple, artichoke, Bengal gram, proteins, curd, yoghurt, onion, oats, broccoli, beans, garlic and more. You should add some of these ingredients to your food everyday. No matter what you have, try and incorporate some space for something good for you. If you can have at least one or two ingredients in every meal you should be fine, as long as you follow your diets correctly. The most important to remember is the no sugar rule.
